HAITI - Earthquake

RHK Raised $50,000 to help Haiti children

A 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit Haiti at 4:53pm on Janurary 12, 2010. The epicenter was 10 miles west of Port-au-Prince, a city of 2 million inhabitants. The earthquake and its 33 aftershocks caused severe infrastructrual damage, injury, and loss of life. It is estimated that approximately 3 million people in the region will need emergency aid in this country where most people already survive on less than $2 a day.

Eden Garden Orphanage
Reaching Hearts for Kids (RHK) has been supporting Eden Garden Orphanage for the past five years. Founded by French missionaries Charles and Gigi Le Morzellec, the orphanage is located in Montrouis, approximately 50 miles north of Port-au-Prince. We received news that all of the children are safe and damange was minimal, with loss of only one of the volunteer homes. However, Jean-Claude, the Haitian director of the orphanage who resides in Port-au-Prince, still remains unaccounted for. We are praying for his safety. RHK is planning a mission trip to help victims in Haiti in March 2010.

There are currently huge shortages of food, clean water, and other essential items. Thousands of are without shelter. Eden Garden Orphanage lies on the main road of Port au Prince and thousands of homeless and displaced people are passing through and asking for help. Le Morzellec has a clinic, a school, a bakery, a church and an orphanage. He is willing to share and help the poor people at this time of tragedy in their lives, but he needs our help. One of our doctor friends, Dr. Bond, is making plans to travel to Haiti to help the injured from the community through Eden Garden Orphanage. Please let us know if you would like to help Reaching Hearts for Kids to help the people in Haiti.

Long-term Care
When the Tsunami hit in December 2005, all media attention was focused on the tragedy. Relief agencies, governments and the UN were all there to help injured and displaced people. Reaching Hearts for Kids, while not a relief agency, looked to the long-term care of children orphaned by the tragedy once the media dispersed. At that time we had no work in Indonesia, but five years later, we now support four orphanages to provide food, shelter and education. Eight of our children have graduated from high school since and are going to college. RHK does provide for immediate relief, but we go beyond the tragic situation to provide long-term support and care.
